Why are Leather Jackets Important

Ok, this post is somewhat a rant, so please bear with me!

Some people think that leather jackets are just another fashion item. They think these were invented only to give you a hollywood-star-look (Look at the pic to see what I mean).

The fact is, leather jackets are NOT a fashion item, at least that wasn’t their initial purpose and though there are quite a few jackets made only for fashion purposes, there are lots and lots of other kind of jackets (that may also look great, why not?).

Let’s see:

  • Fire fighters
  • Cowboys
  • Motorcycle riders
  • Farmers
  • Pilots

What do they have in common? Yes, they all use leather jackets! What a coincide don’t ya’ think?
They use leather jackets for protection. Fire, animals, accidents, those are all events where you’ll want to be protected, and -simply put- there’s no better natural protection than leather. Yes, there’s Kevlar and advanced materials, but most of them are very expensive and can’t be used on a regular basis.

Leather has been used by the human kind since the cage man. It’s easy to shape, cheap, there’s a lot of supply and it smells great. And yes I do love the smell of leather hehe.

Nowadays, it seems we have forgotten our roots, we have forgotten what brought us to where we our now. And while I won’t say a crazy thing like leather made all this possible, I’ll say it helped us at least one bit.

Ok rant off. There, I said it.

Now that I have your attention, what do you plan to use when you go ride that pretty motorcycle next time? You better be wearing a leather motorcycle jacket boy!

How to Buy a Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Now I’m using motorcycles just as an example, so keep that in mind. The following tips can be used for almost any use you plan to give your jacket.

  • Pick a good material, such as cowhide or kangaroo. This kind of leather is not thin, thus it provides a good protection.
  • Test the fit. If your jacket doesn’t fits perfectly, it may not be a good idea to buy it and may be counter-productive during an accident. And of course, you’ll want to be comfy wearing it!
  • Choose a proven brand, like Carhartt Jackets, those are the best in my opinion. (Read my first post to see what I mean).
  • Shop for a deal. There’s no need to spend big bucks to buy a leather jacket. Using the internet you’ll be able to find awesome deals. I’ll write about this in a future post.

Although you may not be a rider, I found very useful this wikipedia entry while writing this article.
